What is a QR Code?

A QR Code is a two-dimensional bar code that is readable by smartphones. It allows to encode over 4000 characters in a two dimensional bar code. QR Codes may be used to display text to the user, to open a URL, save a contact to the address book or to compose text messages. "QR Code" is a registered trademark of DENSO WAVE INCORPORATED.
To read QR Codes with your smartphone, you need an appropriate software installed on your phone. For Android-based devices, you can use Bar code Scanner by ZXing. On iOS-Devices like i Phones there are also QR Code readers available on the App Store, for Example i-nigma. On Firefox OS try QR Code Scanner. On Symbian devices, you can use Mobile tag bar codes reader for example.
If you use a modern web browser (recent versions of Firefox or Chrome) and have a webcam, this site allows you to scan QR Codes with your web browser. You can use this to send a link from a phone to your desktop browser for example.

Microsoft Office 2013 reaches RTM, to launch in Q1 2013



Microsoft yesterday announced that it has completed the Release to Manufacturing build of Office 2013, and that the full version of the office suite would be available to the masses in the first quarter of 2013. The company stated on its official blog that a preview version of Office 13 would be included on Windows RT devices, beginning with the Windows 8 launch on October 26

Users who have subscribed to TechNet or MSDN can download their copies of the final version by mid-November. Volume licensing customers with Software Assurance will be able to download the Office 2013 applications as well as other Office products including SharePoint 2013, Lync 2013 and Exchange 2013 through the Volume Licensing Service Centre by mid-November. These products will be available on the Volume Licensing price list on December 1. Microsoft would be rolling out updates and new capabilities to Office 365 customers in its next service update, starting in November until general availability.

Microsoft stated that people who purchase Office 2010 from retailers or resellers will receive the latest version of Office for free when it is available

What is a Microchip?

Jack Kilby invented the integrated circuit at Texas Instruments in 1958.

By definition the integrated circuit aka microchip is a set of interconnected electronic components such as transistors and resistors, that are etched or imprinted on a onto a tiny chip of a semiconducting material, such as silicon or germanium.

How Microchips Are Made

Microchips are built layer by layer on a wafer of the semiconductor material silicon. The layers are built by a process called photolithography involving chemicals, gases, and light.

First a layer of silicon dioxide is deposited on the surface of the silicon wafer, that layer is covered with a photosensitive chemical called a photoresist.

The photoresist is exposed to ultraviolet light shined through a pattern, which only hardens the areas exposed to the light. Gas is used to etch into the remaining soft areas. This process repeated and modified builds the component circuitry.

Conducting paths between the components are created by overlaying the chip with a thin layer of metal (aluminum). The photolithography and etching processes are used to remove the metal leaving only the conducting pathways

INTERNET

The Internet is a worldwide network of thousands of computers and computer networks. It is a public, voluntary, and cooperative effort between the connected institutions and is not owned or operated by any single organization. The Internet and Transmission Control Protocols were initially developed in 1973 by American computer scientist Vinton Cerf as part of a project sponsored by the United States Department of Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA) and directed by American engineer Robert Kahn.

The Internet began as a computer network of ARPA (ARPAnet) that linked computer networks at several universities and research laboratories in the United States. The World Wide Web was developed in 1989 by English computer scientist Timothy Berners-Lee for the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN).

"The design of the Internet was done in 1973 and published in 1974. There ensued about 10 years of hard work, resulting in the roll out of Internet in 1983. Prior to that, a number of demonstrations were made of the technology - such as the first three-network interconnection demonstrated in November 1977 linking SATNET, PRNET and ARPANET in a path leading from Menlo Park, CA to University College London and back to USC/ISI in Marina del Rey, CA." . - Vinton Cerf explains the timing:

Internet, interconnection of computer networks that enables connected machines to communicate directly. The term popularly refers to a particular global interconnection of government, education, and business computer networks that is available to the public. There are also smaller internets, usually for the private use of a single organization, called intranets.

Internet technology is a primitive precursor of the Information Superhighway, a theoretical goal of computer communications to provide schools, libraries, businesses, and homes universal access to quality information that will educate, inform, and entertain. In early 1996, the Internet interconnected more than 25 million computers in over 180 countries and continues to grow at a dramatic rate.

How Internets Work
Internets are formed by connecting local networks through special computers in each network known as gateways. Gateway interconnections are made through various communication paths, including telephone lines, optical fibers, and radio links. Additional networks can be added by linking to new gateways. Information to be delivered to a remote machine is tagged with the computerized address of that particular machine.

Different types of addressing formats are used by the various services provided by internets (see Internet address). One format is known as dotted decimal, for example: 123.45.67.89. Another format describes the name of the destination computer and other routing information, such as "machine.dept.univ.edu." The suffix at the end of the internet address designates the type of organization that owns the particular computer network, for example, educational institutions (.edu), military locations (.mil), government offices (.gov), and non-profit organizations (.org). Networks outside the United States use suffixes that indicate the country, for example (.ca) for Canada.

Once addressed, the information leaves its home network through a gateway. It is routed from gateway to gateway until it reaches the local network containing the destination machine. Internets have no central control, that is, no single computer directs the flow of information. This differentiates internets from other types of online computer services, such as CompuServe, America Online, and the Microsoft Network.

The Internet Protocol
The Internet Protocol is the basic software used to control an internet. This protocol specifies how gateway machines route information from the sending computer to the recipient computer. Another protocol, Transmission Control Protocol, checks whether the information has arrived at the destination computer and, if not, causes the information to be resent.

Even though computer interaction is in its infancy, it has dramatically changed our world, bridging the barriers of time and distance, allowing people to share information and work together. Evolution toward the Information Superhighway will continue at an accelerating rate. Available content will grow rapidly, making it easier to find any information on the Internet. New applications will provide secure business transactions and new opportunities for commerce. New technologies will increase the speed of information transfer, allowing direct transfer of entertainment-on-demand. Broadcast television may be replaced by unicast, in which each home receives a signal especially tailored for what its residents want to see when they want to see it.

Ati radeon RV 740 uncloaked



It's not exactly a secret that for companies like ATI and NVIDIA it is hard to keep the rumor mill under control. It was early January this year already that certain details surfaced on this lovely wise web hinting about the fact that ATI was working on 40nm products. Weeks later another rumor surfaced, some 40nm products should be arriving in the April/May timeframe and among the new products would be a chipset that carries product codename (ASIC name) RV740, slated as the first 40nm release. And that's interesting all by itself.

Now .. the technology industry works in mysterious ways and a pre-production model, slash prototype RV740 board to Guru3D.com arrived at our office a couple of days ago.

Not being tied to an NDA, without further ado, lets meet and greet with that RV740 graphics chipset. RV740 is positioned somewhere in the upper segment of budget level products. We are sure this product is going to be cheaper than 99 USD / 89 EUR. And considering where the product is targeted in the market, ATI is pulling a rabbit out the hat with a head the size of an elephant.

Why? What can you expect? Well, from what we see... performance is really close to the performance level of a Radeon HD 4850. So meanwhile others are re-labeling and reinserting their products at a new price point, ATI is moving forward with more interesting steps. Smaller die-size, more shader processors (compared to RV730), oh and that life-size rabbit I just mentioned... it's GDDR5 memory.

We are going to bring you guys a nice little sneak preview of what ATI is working on. Let me clearly state, nothing in this review is finalized or can be seen as a concluding fact, the specifications (clock frequencies) and configurations might change for all we know. We are testing an early engineering sample here. It will however be a pretty good assessment of what ATI is going to release somewhere in April.

Windows 7: Few more changes from Beta to RC


Dual Boot partition drive letter assignment
In the current beta, the other Windows OS in a dual boot configuration wouldn't get a drive letter and therefore wouldn't show up in explorer. This is fixed in RC after immense feedback from the beta customers.

Improved taskbar thumbnail overflow
Users who have a significant number of open windows for a program, encounter a scaling mechanism where the thumbnail views turn into list views along with close buttons on the thumbnail प्रेविएव्स

Remote Desktop Jump List
Remote Desktop Connection settings can be pinned to the Jump List now so that they always appear

Applying taskbar settings
Customized taskbar settings are now saved across sessions more reliably. Based on the bugs from Beta, the settings are written within 30 seconds providing enough time to batch a group of changes during the session.

Multi-touch zoom
Support for the zoom gesture is now available for Windows Explorer. Using the zoom gesture you can switch between view modes in Explorer such as zooming from Small Icons to Extra Large icons

Moving up in Folder hierarchy
Unlike in beta, the parent folder's button will appear in the address bar at all times and therefore going ‘up' will always be a single click away in a predictable location in RC.

Apple to launch Snow Leopard on June 8



The Baltimore Sun writer has come up with a report that Apple will roll out Snow Leopard, its next operating system on June 8, by noting down the similarities between the June opening of the Mascone Center and past Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) events.

The San Francisco event center, Moscone frequently booked by Apple for its developer conference has an opening from June 6 through June 12 for a corporate meeting. Apple held its WWDC at Moscone during the same time of the month in 2007 and 2008 . Last year at its WWDC , Apple confirmed that the next upgrade to Mac OS X would be Snow Leopard and it would launch in about a year. CEO Steve Jobs delivered the keynote on the Monday of WWDC, last year and unveiled the iPhone 3G which Apple started selling from July 11. According to The Baltimore Sun, similar to previous developer conferences, Apple will hold a keynote on the Monday of the event and announce the launch of Snow Leopard.

Microsoft is working towards the RC release of Windows 7, the next version of its operating system with the internal target date set to April 10, 2009. A Collins Stewart analyst has projected that Microsoft will finalize the code for Windows 7 by June or July. The release of Windows 7 would allow Microsoft to make $1.5 billion in additional revenue, with nearly $1 billion coming from the upgrade market and $680 million from the netbook market, if Microsoft increases the number of premium versions of Windows being used on Netbooks. Microsoft's shares could make a good investment even with a sluggish PC market, says the analyst.

With rumors about Windows 7's RTM launch in August and the final release by the end of this year's holiday shopping season, we could be seeing two of the major operating systemsApple's Snow Leopard and Microsoft's Windows 7 competing for a final release this year.

SanDisk to 64 GB USB drive


SanDisk is set to release USB flash drive would be available in 8 GB, 16 GB, 32 GB and 64 GB capacities. The company said in a release that it would allow backup of files at the touch of a button.

t’s said to be the first drive with such a facility. It also boasts AES hardware encryption and password protection to keep “critical business files safe.”
