A goal scored from the half way line against Wimbledon on the opening day of the1996-1997 season confirmed the midfielders prodigious talent and set him on theway to superstar status. He scored with what was to become a trademark free kick against Colombia inEngland's opening match of the 1998 World Cup but an incident in the second roundagainst Argentina gained him notoriety. As he lay on the turf following a challengefrom Diego Simeone he kicked out at the midfielder, Simeone milked the foul for allhis worth earning Beckham a red card and Argentina a man advantage. A tiredEngland side went out on penalties. Beckham was vilified on his return to domesticfootball but silenced his critics with a string of excellent performances as ManchesterUnited completed a league, FA Cup and European Cup treble with Beckham beingvoted MVP by UEFA. That summer he married pop star Victoria 'Posh Spice' Adamsand the couple become one of the most talked about and photographed in the country.Beckham was one of the few players to emerge with credit from England's feebleEuro 2000 campaign. Two years later a foul from Argentinean midfielder Aldo Duscherin a Champions League tie ended Beckham's season, while he was playing the bestfootball of his career. He recovered to play in the summer's World Cup finals andgained redemption against Argentina by scoring the winning penalty. A half fitBeckham however struggled in the tournament and England bowed out with awhimper against Brazil.Beckham's relationship with Manchester United coach Alex Ferguson deteriorated,Ferguson was increasingly annoyed at the influence of Beckham's media whore wifeand in a famous dressing room incident following an FA Cup loss against Arsenalkicked a boot which 'accidentally' struck Beckham in the face. He was sold to RealMadrid in the summer of 2003 for £25 million.Beckham was arguably the best player in Spain for the first half of the season but hisform and fitness dipped alarmingly in the new year following allegations of an affairwith his personal assistant. He had a disastrous European Championship, missingtwo penalties - one in a group game against France and one in the quarter-finalshoot-out against hosts Portugal. His international career came to an end afterEngland's tame exit, once again on penalties against Portugal, in the 2006 World Cup.What Beckham lacks in speed and dribbling skills he more than makes up for with hislaser precision crossing and dead ball ability - he is almost as good as his ability tosell shirts suggests.
