While this is by no means a complete guide to numerology and the meaning behind the numbers, it will be a good primer to get you started on your way to figuring out some of your own numbers and what they mean. Our examples will be based on Pythagorean numerology.
Date Calculations
The life path numbers gives us an broad overview of the lessons, challenges and opportunities that we will face in our lives. This number is the most important number in your chart. Your life path number can be thought of almost as an external influence. An easy way to think of it is like the weather or the plot of a movie. While it can affect your life at certain points or phases it comes from outside you and has little to do with YOU as an individual. To arrive at this number you add the month, day and year of your birth. For all our examples, we will use a fictional character John Alan Smith who's birth date is 8/12/1968. We would caculate his life path as follows:
8 + 1 + 2 +1+ 9 = 6 + 8 = 35
again, because we can't have a double digit number, we reduce the sum of these numbers by adding the two numbers in 35, which gives us:
3 + 5 = 8
This means that John's life path number is an 8.
Your day of birth number gives an indication of your point of view. This number is simply the number of the day of your birth without the month or year. Given our assumption that our fictional character John Alan Smith was born on 8/12/1968, his day of birth number would be 12. Because we can't have a two digit number, we would reduce this number by adding it's parts, which would give us 1 + 2 = 3 . This means that John's day of birth number is 3
It should also be noted that day of birth numbers are a rare exception in numerology where both the two digit number and the reduced number should be considered. Again using John as an example, his day of birth number is a 3, but because it was derived from the number 12 his day of birth number will also be affected by the individual parts of the number and he will show some traits of both a 1 and a 2 along with a 3. A better example might two people, one born on the 14th and the other born on the 23rd. While both would have a day of birth number of 5, the person born on the 14th would show characteristics of both 1 and 4 and would be different from the person born on the 23rd who would have some characteristics of 2 and 3.
Name Calculations
The following chart shows the numbers assigned to each letter and is the basis for many numerology readings. To read the chart, find the letter you are looking for and look at the corresponding number at the top of the column containing the letter. For example, the letter A would be 1, the letter B would be 2, the letter C would be 3, etc.

Destiny
The numerical sum of your first, middle and last name in numerology is your Destiny number. This number indicates the purpose, direction and goals of your life. Unlike the life path number this number reflects who YOU are from a more internal or personal level.
To begin with, write down your full name (first, middle and last). It is important that you use your name as it appears on your birth certificate. Then assign a number to each letter in your name. To do that, locate the letter in the above chart, and then look at the number at the top of the column containing that letter. That number is the number you would assign to that letter. Do that for each of the letters in your full name. In our example, we will use our fictional person named John Alan Smith.

The next step is to add up all these numbers and then reduce the result to a single digit.
1 + 6 + 8 + 5 + 1 + 3 + 1 + 5 + 1 + 4 + 9 + 2 + 8 = 54
Because we can't have a two digit number, we would then reduce 54 to a single digit by adding together the 5 and the 4.
5 + 4 = 9
This means that in our example, John's birthname reduces to a 9.
This number reflects your innermost desires and the dreams you hold closest. Because it influences the desicions we make and how we live our lives it is a very important number that can affect everything - our lifestyles, careers, relationships, friendships and more. The Heart's Desire number is calculated by using all the vowels in your name. The vowels are a, e, i, o, u and sometimes y, depending on how it is used. As a basic rule, if a y sounds like a vowel (Lynn), it is a vowel, whereas if it sounds like a vowel but is coupled with another vowel (Harley) it is considered a consonent.
Again using our example of John Alan Smith, we would get:

or 6 + 1 + 1 + 9 = 17, which when reduced would give us 1 + 7 = 8. That means that John's Heart's Desire number is an 8.
