The successful use of a technology requires an optimal working safety and the compatibility with the environment. Laser technology can only be used profitably not only in science but also industry and medicine, if the corresponding hazards and risks are recognized and controlled efficiently.
The LZH has been working for years in the field of laser safety and is a leading center of competence on a national as well as international level. The cooperation with international standardization committees guarantees a constant exchange of information between science and standardization.
The LZH carries out the following tasks:
Hazard identification and risk analysis
Protection concepts
Development and qualification of protective equipment
Laser system inspections and safety-related consulting
The design of a production line for laser material processing or a medical operation room requires that special safety-related importance be attached to setting up a nominal ocular hazard area. Appropriate protection measures must be taken on the basis of legal and technical regulations for the shielding of laser radiation.
In this connection, the LZH carries out trials with personal protective equipment for the use in the nominal ocular hazard area; this includes for instance protective eyewear against ultrashort pulse laser radiation or protective clothing for the use of hand-held laser devices.
In addition, the LZH focuses on developing and qualifying active and passive shielding for the nominal ocular hazard area.
The development of hand-held or hand-positioned lasers for material processing is accompanied by taking into account safety-related aspects. This includes defining the demands on safety-related components such as controls, laser beam isolation, or shielding, as well as providing safety concepts and implementing them.
Furthermore, the LZH offers laser system inspections and safety-related consulting according to customer orders.
The Laser Zentrum Hannover is your competent partner for all matters of laser safety.
